Apple's first two retail stores opened on the same day in 2001, and there are now over 240 stores open in seven countries (soon to be eight). With the help of hundreds of people, I've collected information about all those stores, along with scores of future store locations.

The stores operation has been profitable for the last four years, and no store has ever had to close. Apple has been opening 35 to 40 new stores each year for the past four years or so, although the late 2008 economic crisis may slow that rate for 2009.

This page has detailed information for stores that opened in 2009-2010. Find detailed store information for other periods here: 2001-2003 / 2004-2006 / 2007-2008.

Surf here to find the list of future stores that I've confirmed...and some speculation.

2009

  1. Friendly Center - Greensboro, NC - Feb. 21 - Part of a 75-acre open-air shopping village located northwest of downtown, with 1.3 million s.f. of retail space anchored by Sears, Belk and Macy's. The store was originally slated for a space in the original mall (F5?), and job listings were posted Nov. 7, 2007. However, the mall was expanded by 20,000 s.f., so construction was delayed to occupy a larger space (5,873 s.f. ,$1.7 million) in that area, next to the future Williams Sonoma and Anthropologie stores. The grand opening was delayed by facade changes, and is now scheduled for February 21, 2009. [mall plan, pdf] [Nov. 13 construction] [Feb. 4 storefront] [store location] [grand opening video]
  2. Robina Town Center - Robina (Australia) - First reported by MacTalk in mid-Nov. 2008, this mall 50 miles south of Brisbane on the mid-east coast will finish a waterside expansion area in mid-2009 where Apple will locate. The area used to be a swamp before 1980, but has been developed into an planned, inland, lakeside community of 30,000 residents along the M1 highway, with a full range of residential options, office space and amenities. The upscale location, with 1 million s.f. and 220 retailers, draws shoppers from a wide region. Job listings posted Nov. 25, 2008, but interviews delayed until March 2009. Grand opening May 9th. 3. 928 State Street - Santa Barbara (CA) - In Feb. 2005 a newspaper noted that the Blue Bee clothing firm "beat out" Apple for a fourth branch at 513 State Street. In Dec. 2006 a potential space at 716 State St. address was leased to M.A.C. Cosmetics, eliminating another possible location. (2-05). In Jan. 2008 the local newspaper reported Apple was negotiating for historic 928 State St. (Rogers Furniture Building, 1926-era), formerly Pier 1. The 52-foot wide space had about 9,400 s.f. each on the ground floor and mezzanine. The lease is reportedly $4.53 per s.f. , or about $68,000 a month. However, planning documents filed with the city in Dec. 2007 indicate Apple would remove the 4,375 s.f. mezzanine, replace it with a 3,706 s.f second-story, and install a new elevator and stairs. Job listings were posted March 29, 2008, indicating a late 2008 opening. However, also in March 2008 Apple requested that consideration of their application be postponed, and meetings were held between Apple and Historical Landmarks committee in April. In early Oct. 2008 the city's Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) reviewed revised plans from Apple architectural representative Cearnal Andrulaitis. Construction began in late Oct. 2008. Grand opening May 9, 2009. 4. Bahnhofstrasse - Zurich (Switzerland) - In August 2005 the Swiss-based Web site MacPrime reported that Bahnhofstrasse 77 would be a future store site. In March 2006 they reported Apple had signed a contract for the the 2,960 s.f. space at a reported $762,000 a year. The space is now occupied by a United Colors of Benetton store. In early May 2006, the newspaper Bilanz said the lease papers had been signed and the store is scheduled to open by summer 2007. Appeared as a job location on Aug. 26, 2006. Then a lease dispute between the landlord and Benetton was first reported in Sept. 2006, and as of early November is still delaying Apple's take-over the property. In Jan. 2008 a Swiss newspaper said the lease dispute had been resolved, and the 3,200 s.f. store would open in mid-July 2008, with Apple paying $1.9 million a year on the lease. As of May, 2008 there is no visible construction, but by June MacPrime revealed architectural plans showing a 3,012 s.f. single-level store. However, the store was later revealed to be two levels, on the ground-floor and in a basement level. Job listings appeared Feb. 13, 2008. Grand opening May 22, 2009? In late May the developer handed out a list of the first five tenants, and Apple was listed among them. Job listings posted Jan. 30th. The location satisfies an apparent need for an Upper West Side store, which previously had been rumored around 84th & Broadway. As of May 14, 2009 the existing building has been demolished and the steel structure for the new building has been erected. The permits indicate 50% of the existing exterior wall must be preserved, the building will be 45 feet tall, have a 75-foot storefront, and that there will be just a single floor of about 8,400 s.f. Total cost stated in the building permit is $37,945,000. Apple retained 50% of the exerior walls to avoid filing for a demolition and construction permit, instead of a "alteration and reconstruction" permit. Based on early photos, the storefront will resemble the Boylston Street (Boston) store, with a little bit of Fifth Avenue and George Street. About Aug. 1st, construction workers at the store said the store would open by Thanksgiving, and CFO Peter Oppenheimer has confirmed a November opening. Future Store Locations

Apple doesn't acknowledge the location of future stores until about 7 to 10 days before the grand opening. Despite this shyness, the locations and opening dates of many future retail stores has been confirmed through information from Apple's job openings Web page, news articles and tipsters. In all, I've identified about 70 specific locations.

Apple executives have said they will open "about 25 stores" duringfiscal 2009, with a little more than half of those in international locations.

Check my list of possible future U.S. stores locations, future airport sites, and possible international store sites.

If you have information about future stores, let me know!

  • Qianmen Street - Beijing (China) - During a May 2004 meeting with analysts from stock broker Merrill Lynch, Ron Johnson said the company was considering a retail store in China. During an Oct. 22, 2007 financial conference call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirmed a Beijing store by summer 2008. Job listings appeared Nov. 1, 2007. In early Feb. 2008 the location was identified as Qianmen Street, which is being renovated and will re-open June 8th. However, in April the Chinese government said the street would not be finished in time to allow Apple to renovate and build out its store space. So Apple switched its first to the Sanlitun District (store there opened July 19, 2008). [details] [rendering #1 / #2]
  • Covent Garden - London (UK) - In Dec. 2007 tipsters pointed to Covent Garden for a future store, which the district's Web site describes as "London's most vibrant." It's home to hundreds of restaurants and shops. In March 2008 Estates Gazette reported it would occupy a 25,000 s.f. former Rock Garden space (#1 The Piazza, northwest James St. & Kings St.) on three levels, reportedly one of the largest and most expensive leasings ever in the area. It would be the third London store and the second in city centre--the Regent Street store is about one mile east. In mid-July 2008 Apple filed planning documents with the city of Westminster (read news story here, download pdf planning drawings). In Oct. 2008 Apple filed documents with the city saying construction would begin Jan. 15, 2009 and finish within 11-15 months. On Oct. 21 the Westminster City Council approved Apple's plans (revised drawings, pdf). In July and Aug. 2009 Apple designer Gensler submitted additional design documents that revised the original plans. Probable grand opening in fall 2010. It is the second-largest city in Germany, and the largest non-capital city of the European Union. In early June '09 the iFUN.de Web site spotted a construction barricade at the AEZ mall, a 1970-vintage location upgraded and expanded in 2006 to 240 shops in 635,000 s.f. The store is located on the ground level. The very wide store could open by late summer '09. [rendering #1 / #2] [brochure, pdf] [map] [photo June '09]
  • Lincoln Park / Halsted Street -Chicago (IL) - On June 29, 2007 ChicagoBusiness Web site said Apple was in negotiations with M Development LLC for some part of an 18,400 s.f. triangular space at the intersection of Halsted, Clybourn and North Streets on the city's near north side, about 1 mile from the existing North Michigan Avenue store. The lot was a BP service station (1560 N. Halsted St.), in the midst of an area that is rapidly being developed. On Nov. 17, 2008 the city issued a permit to demolish the gas station building under the address 801 W. North Ave., and work began the same day. In early April 2009 ChicagoBusiness said Apple had signed a long-term lease on 18,000 s.f. for $700,000 a year. They said Apple will erect a 15,000 s.f. store on the triangle. By Oct. 2009 much of the structural steel had been erected, revealing a rectangular building with entrances on the north and south. The building has a basement, so will most likely be a 2-level store with spiral glass staircase down to the lower level. In Dec. 2009 Apple spokesperson Amy Barney confirmed the store to RedEye, calling it the "Lincoln Park" store. Will open summer 2010. • Walnut Street - Originally reported in July 2004 as 1727 Walnut St. in the Rittenhouse Row district of downtown, formerly Borders Books, but in 2005 determined to become an H&M store. In 2006 the focus shifted to 1619 Walnut, and then again in Jan. 2009 when the Brasserie Perrier restaurant closed suddenly. Vesper Property Group purchased the 6-story, 39,305 s.f. building in March 2008 for $7.1 million, and reportedly increased the ground-floor lease from $19 s.f. (considered very low) to $120-$140 s.f. (the going Walnut St. rate). As of March 31, 2009 leasing agent PernaFrederick Commercial Real Estate was leasing the 3rd and 4th floors (5,100 s.f. each) for $21 s.f. The 1937-era building is on the National Register of Historic Buildings, and was the home of CBS affiliate KYW-TV and the "Mike Douglas Show" for many years. Because of the studio, the ground floor has 15-foot ceilings, making it a great architectural location for Apple. In Oct. 2009 a local blogger received a tip that Apple dropped plans for 1619, and has leased 10,962 s.f. at 1607-09 Walnut St., a former banking institution. No planning/zoning documents have been filed, and the property last sold in 2001 for $2,507,900. Job listings postd on Nov. 1, 2009 for a May 2010 grand opening. [photo #1] [photo #2] [Sept. • Georgetown (Wisconsin Avenue) - Washington (DC) - In late Sept. 2007 a tipster said Apple was finalizing lease plans for a store in the Georgetown district. A week later newspapers revealed Apple had purchased the three-story building at 1229 Wisconsin Ave. NW for $13.7 million. The land and building are assessed at $7,288,500, and the lot covers 7,456 s.f. Previous tenant French Connection renovated the building in 2004, which required approval from the 3-architect Old Georgetown Board for any exterior changes. The area is transitioning to more upscale retail stores. By June 1, existing tenant FCUK was moving out, but no Apple construction visible. In June, 2008 a tipster says Apple is having city permit problems. In July 2008 Apple had presented a demolition/re-built plan to the Board for approval. However, the Board and an architectural commission failed to approve Apple's three sets of designs. Apple postponed its Jan. 6, 2009 its presentation to the ANC. On Feb. 2, 2009 the ANC approved Apple's design featuring red brick and a smaller logo. As of June '09 no construction activity and no job listings posted. On Oct. 30th tipster says barricade up and construction underway. On Nov. 1, 2009 job listings were posted for a May 2010 grand opening. [photo] [Jun '09 gallery] [CFA minutes, Mar '09, pdf] [Nov. • Rue Halévy - Opera District (Paris) - In mid-May 2006 Apple V-P Europe Pascal Cagli reportedly emailed authorized resellers that the title "Apple Centre" was being revoked, and replaced with another term. The French Web site MacGeneration says this is in preparation for opening a store in the Opera district of Paris, generally north of the Champs Elysees, during 2006. Later rumors put the store on Beaumarchais Blvd. some time during 2007. But then in Sept. 2008 a tipster pointed to a signed lease for #12 rue Halévy, a 112-wide building set on Place Jacques Rouché behind the Opera House. The building dates to 1865 and has lately been converted to offices. The architect is reportedly Jean-Jacques Ory, who desgned a corner entrance on the south side. Construction on the 13,200 s.f. store began in early 2009. In mid-Jan. 2009 MacBoudille claimed this store would open before the Carousel de Louvre store. In July 2009 passersby noticed barricades carried a Uniqlo sign, a Japanese clothing retailer, putting Apple's plans in doubt. But shortly after, a Nov. 2008 approval was discovered by a Paris historical commission noting Apple's application. A dispute over hotel space in the building has apparently delayed this project to Spring 2010. Confirmed for summer 2010 opening by Ron Johnson during Carrousel du Louvre opening press conference. • Hay Street - Perth (Australia) - On July 16, 2009 a job listing appeared for a store in city centre, but without an indication of exactly where in this western city of about 1.6 million. On Nov. 11, 2009 a demoliton application was made for 790-794 Hay Street, an historic 3-story building formerly occupied by a pastry shop and restaurant. On Dec. 1, 2009 a "refurbishment application was filed with the city planning agency, notated "Apple Inc." It would be the only store on the western side of the continent. Construction approvals could take many months, meaning the store might open in late 2010. [area map] [planning applications, pdf]
  • Southgate - Edmonton (Alb, Canada) - A 1970-vintage indoor mall with 165 shops in 455,000 s.f. operated by Ivanhoe Cambridge south of city center. • Chinook Centre - Calgary (Alb., Canada) - During his Feb. 22, 2006 podcast of "Your Mac Life," Shawn King said an unnamed Apple employee officially confirmed a future store in this city of 1 million residents, and the destination for 5 million tourists a year. The mall south of downtown has 1.1 million s.f., and includes 200 stores, 4 restaurants, 19 other eateries, a bowling centre and multi-screen cinema. It was built in 1960 and renovated in 2001 for $300 million. It has the third-highest sales per-square-foot of Canada's malls, behind Yorkdale and Eaton Centre, both also Apple store locations. As of March 13, 2006 a lease had not been signed, but the mall was in talks with Apple. Lease signed in Dec. 2006 for 33'x110' space (3,651 s.f) on ground floor near the center of the mall in former Reitman's space. Job listings posted May 6, 2007. But after that, the location dropped off the radar. A load-bearing pillar within the space could not be removed as Apple requested, tipsters said, so the project was put on hold. However, in Jan. 2010 a job listing appeared for the store, indicating that it's viable again. The 5,000 s.f. store will open in a 180,000 s.f. mall expansion area by August 2010.
  • Haywood Mall - Greenville, SC - This city's Apple store was originally planned for the 1.2 million s.f. Haywood Mall, but there was no appropriate space. So in August 2007 Apple switched to 670,000 s.f. Magnolia Park Town Center that was being created after the former mall was demolished along I-85. It would have been the second-largest mall in the state, with construction to start in late 2008 or early 2009, with Apple penciled in for a 5,100 s.f. space for Phase I at 550 S. Main St. But the economic slow-down halted demolition of Magnolia Park, and in March 2009 Apple store switched back to Haywood Mall, just 2 miles away from Magnolia Park, and signed a lease. Confirmed in the former Childrens Place and Hair Place spaces on the lower level. Job listings posted Jan. 12, 2010, and the store will open in Aug. 2010. Reported by Tipsters

  • Champs Elysées (Paris) - In 2001 Sr. VP Retail Ron Johnson named the five "key" locations in the world where Apple needs to be, and Apple is already at four: North Michigan Avenue, SoHo, Ginza and Regent Street, leaving just this grand Paris avenue lined with major retailers yet to be fulfilled by Apple. The street (1.25 miles) runs from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe north of the Seine River, and includes a Virgin Megastore, Disney Store, Louis Vuitton, Sephora, Swatch, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Lacoste, Gap, several cinemas and auto showrooms. The north side of the street is considered more desirable than the south side. Tipsters confirmed Apple's Paris interest in 2003, and by April 2005 were pointing to #66 near the Virgin Megastore at Rue La Boetie. In May 2005 Steve Jobs told a Regent Street store visitor the Paris store will open in 2007. In Spring 2006 speculation turned to 11 Rue Scribe, north of the Tuileries. In Feb. 2008 Planet Hollywood will move from its location at 76, Avenue Champs Elysées, sparking speculation Apple might want the 3,200 s.f. space. In the account, the reporter mentions that Apple may (will?) come to the center. The development is being aimed at both office workers and tourists during the day, but also trying to create after-hours and weekend traffic with a cinema and restaurants. It's the fourth reported location for an Apple store in Paris. First reported by MacGeneration.
  • Lynnhaven Mall - Virginia Beach, VA - Indoor mall along I-264 east of Norfolk, with 160 shops and a double-decker carousel. Tipster says Apple is waiting for the "perfect" space to open up. (12-04)

The mall experienced a revivial during the past year, and claims it's the largest mall in the metro area. Revealed in Dec. 2004 that the mall would undergo an expansion that will include an Apple store. However, by Nov. 2006 an Apple reseller moved into the mall, and The Greene mall opened in Aug. 2007, signaling that Apple may have changed locations.
  • Maui, HI - The island is known as the most lively island in the chain, with only 135,000 residents but 2.1 million annual tourists from the U.S. (87%) and other countries (13%). But surveys also show the largest percentage of visitors in the over-$150,000 income category, followed by $70,000-$124,999. And residents residents have an average household income of $67,190. A tipster reported the store in early Oct. 2006, and the store was to open in Fall 2007. However, the mall changed management from Gilmcher to Madison Marquette in late 2007, and lease conflicts forced Apple to withdraw. As of Feb. '08 Apple was looking at the General Growth Properties-owned Glenbrook Square, but by early March '08 mall management said "no plans or consideration" of a store. In late May tipsters confirmed a store at this location by late 2008. Job listings posted early June, 2008. Store could open by early 2009. [mall plan #1 / #2, pdf]

Some time in 2008 Apple will move into the second-level space now occupied by Gap Kids/Baby Gap, after that company decided to move to a street-level space outside the center. The space is at one end of the mall adjacent to Neiman Marcus. The mall has 500,000 s.f. of space, and brags that it has the highest per-square-foot sales of any U.S. mall (~$1,600 vs. Apple's >$4,000 and national average of $340). [mall map]

The size (pop. 23,000), remote location and demographics seem at odds witih Apple's usual choices, but the region is changing as new housing developments are built. Either store could open by Fall 2009. [Palms Crossing brochure, pdf] [Piazza del Sol brochure, pdf]
  • Manila (The Philippines) - In April '09 a tipster said Apple has long-term plans to locate a high-profile store within the future stock exchange store located on 5th Avenue in Fort Bonifacio, the former U.S. and later Philippine military base. The former base was privatized in 1995 and is being developed into various commercial projects. The store would be considered an "anchor" tenant for the stock exchange building, according to wording on the CB Engineers Web site. [area map] [early renderings]
  • Dublin (Ireland) - In June 2009 a local newspaper reported that Apple real estate execs have been working with advisers Jones Lang LaSalle to scout locations in the city, including Suffolk Street (former Habitat store with 22,000 s.f. for $1.8m per year) and Grafton Street (former Dunnes Stores, closed Feb. 2009). Both locations are along high-profile, high-traffic shopping streets. Grafton St. is always among the Top 10 retail locations in Europe (Cushman Wakefield). Lease costs are falling in the city, the newspaper reports, and several international retailers are looking for bargain spaces. The store could cover 6,000 s.f. over two levels. Now, the only Apple presence in Ireland is four "store-in-a-store" areas inside PC World stores, three with full-time Apple-trained reps. In Jan. 2010 Irish press reported Apple was on-track for a 2011 opening in Dublin. updated
  • Fox River Mall - Grand Chute (WI) - In June '09 a tipster said an Apple store was planned for Appleton, but at an unknown location. However, it's most likely at this General Growth mall with 180 shops in 1.2 million s.f., just west and outside of the Appleton city limits. The store could open in 2010.
  • Bourbon Pompéia - São Paulo (Brazil) - Persistent tipsters say that a store will open in this city of 11 million people on Francisco Matarazzo Avenue. It would be the first store in South America. The location is in or next to the Bourgon Pompéia Mall, which opened in 2007 with levels ground to three for retail, and levels 4-8 for vehicle parking. The mall has an Imax theater, Sony Style store, and many other upscale retailers. According to the tipsters, the store will cover 13,000 s.f. on the 4th level of the building, converted from parking to retail. The store entrance will be on the 3rd level of the mall. The store could open by summer, or Dec. 21, 2009.
  • W. 6th St. & N. Lamar Blvd. - Austin (TX) - In July 2009 an observant tipster noticed Apple's real estate scouts looking at property west of city center, in the area with REI, Whole Foods' flagship, Book People, Anthropologie and other upscale retailers. Apple may be interested in the northeast corner, where tenants are moving out. Despite this tip, the move had not occurred by the end of Sept. (Okay, maybe this report wasn't so accurate!)
  • Lonsdale House - Melbourne (Australia) - In Aug. 2009 the Victoria planning minister approved plans for a developer to demolish the 1930-era five-story building at 269-273 Lonsdale Street, as part of a larger retail development that would create 240 store spaces. The decision had been fought by art deco preservationists, who claimed the building was irreplaceable. After the planning approval, an official of Colonial Global Asset Management said his company had been in contact with Apple about a space, but that no agreement or lease had been reached. [Aug. '09 news story] [speculative rendering]
  • Les Terrasses du Port - Marseille (France) - In Oct. 2009 a tipster told the MacGeneration Web site that Apple was planning for a store in this future port-side development, set to open by 2012-2013. The city of The mall will have 400,000 s.f. of space over four levels, with about 150 shops. In Jan. 2009 MacBidouille reported a real estate developer confirmed Apple has leased an 8,600 s.f. space, with the mall opening in 2013. [rendering #1 / #2]
  • Wall Street - New York City (NY) - Just steps away from the NY Stock Exchange, 23 Wall Street is the former HQ of financier JP Morgan and dates from 1914. The street in front was the scene of an anarchist bombing in 1920 that killed 33, and pockmarks still show on the building's exterior. The building and a connected property were converted to condos and retail in 2003. The wedge-shaped, highly-visible corner building is 80-feet tall, making it Apple's most impressive. In Sept. 2008, the city issued permits to demolish and remove the interior furnishings, but in the same month The Real Deal reported Apple dropped plans for a store here. • The Oracle - Reading (UK) - A mid-town shopping center 40 miles west of London that bills itself as "the first in a new generation of town centre shopping and leisure developments to be built in this country." It's anchored by Debenhams, House of Fraser and Boots, along with 90 other retailers. It features an 880-foot riverside promenade on the River Kennet, with 25 restaurants, cafes and bars with outdoor seating, accompanied by a 10-screen cinema. Reportedly in former spaces of Dolcis and Envy stores on the upper level. Job listings posted May 3, 2007--but no activity since, and it's unknown if the plans have been cancelled. [mall map]
  • Silverburn Shopping Centre- Glasgow (Scotland) - In Dec. 2009 a news story said developer Hammerson was "in talks" with Apple to occupy a space here, possibly in a 100,000 s.f. expansion area. The 1 million s.f. mall opened in 2007 with 94 stores is on the M77 highway southwest of city centre, and about 6 miles from the existing Buchanan Street Apple store. Hammerson aquired half-interest in the mall in Dec. 2009 in a bidding war, after a bank foreclosed on the previous owner. No exact space has been identified, and the timing of a grand opening isn't known.
  • Hamburg - City Center - No details are available, but in Dec. 2009 the German newspaper Die Welt said Apple intends to open a high-profile store in the city center of this city.
  • Valencia (Spain) - In Jan. 2010 real estate sources told ABC.es that Apple would open a retail store at 25 Calle de Cristóbal Colon in city center, across from the large El Corte Inglés department store. Apple's architects are reportedly obtaining permits to renovate and upgrade the historic apartment building designed by noted Spanish architect Lucas Garcia Cardona in 1889. The building is set on the corner of an angled intersection, providing the building with great exposure. The buildling features wrough-iron balconies, masonry details and a upper-level "viewing room." The sources say the store will open in 2010, making it the first Applel store in Spain. [1889 photo] [current photo]
  • Barcelona (Spain) - In early 2009 the newspaper "Expansion" reported Apple's real estate team was scouting Madrid and Barcelona for 10,000 s.f. of retail space. No activity was noted until Oct. 2009 when the Macuarium Web site reported construction at 38-40 Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona, one of the city's main streets, and the destination for millions of tourists, many visiting the nearby Casa Batllo House (#43) by architect Antoni Gaudi. Further scouting by the Noticiasdot.com Web site found tight security at the construction site, further hinting Apple may be the tenant. The update coincided with financial news from Apple that noted Spain sales topped Europe, with a 40% increase during Q4 2009. Update: At the end of Oct. 2009, it was revealed that the Madarin Oriental hotel is building at 38-40, not Apple. inactive
  • Brooklyn / Williamsburg - New York City (NY) - In early September 2007 tipsters said Apple's real estate team was looking at properties in Brooklyn, possible along Atlantic Avenue or in Williamsburg. In early October 2007 the New York Post reported Apple was looking at a development along Kent Ave. between 5th and 7th Streets, on the ground floor of condos that will open in late 2008. That location later turned into a Duane Reade store, not Apple. In Feb. 2008 the New York Post reported that borough president was pitching several sites to Apple: Albee Square, One Hanson Place and the ground floor of the Municipal Building on Joralemon St. In April 2008 Apple's plans were confirmed, but the exact location is still unknown. On Sept 26, 2008 the Gothamist Web site reported Apple purchased the ex-Salvation Army building at 176 Bedford Ave., but no further activity. In Dec. 2009 an architectural source confirmed another "New York City" store, apparently referring to one outside Manhattan, but didn't provide location details. updated
  • CityCenter- Las Vegas (NV) - Cancelled - In early June 2008 a tipster says Apple would locate in the most-visible "Crystals" space at the new CityCenter complex on 76 acres just south of the Bellagio hotel on The Strip. The site is one of the largest and most expensive developments on The Strip, and has been plagued with funding and worker safety issues. Apple's space will feature an angular set of huge glass panels facing Las Vegas Blvd., all designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. Most locations with the complex of four hotels, condos, spa, casino, restaurants and 500,000 s.f. of retail will open Dec. 16, 2009, but without Apple as a retail tenant. • 1 Bloor East - Toronto (Ont.) - Cancelled? - In March, 2008 a tipster reported that developer Bazis International will build a luxury, 80-story residential development at the corner of Bloor and Yonge Streets, including three floors of retail space totaling 100,000 s.f.. It would be the tallest structure in the city after the CN Tower. The developer has apparently bragged that Apple would be an anchor tenant in the building, apparently in the corner space. The location is described by some as, "at the corner of two of Toronto's highest profile streets, at the east end of Toronto's toniest shopping area, and steps from Toronto's busiest subway station." The development was scheduled for completion in 2011, but in March 2009 financial backing collapsed, putting the entire project in jeopardy. In June '09 a large space between 130 and 150 Bloor West seems to be under construction. However, this project seems cancelled. • 84th & Broadway - New York City - not active - street-level store in an unknown space; this third open/planned store in Manhattan is on the Upper West Side, west of Central Park, north of Lincoln Center, and not far from Columbia University and City College of New York. It's an upscale part of town that's become known for its trendy restaurants, clubs and bars. This site was identified in early 2004, but there was no further activity until Dec. 2006, when rumors about this store again surfaced. In Dec. 2007 the New York Post newspaper said Apple would occupy the former Victoria's Secret store at 1981-Broadway at 67th Street, which may satisfy the need for a store on the city's Upper West Side.
  • Grand Place - St. Paul (MN) - Cancelled? - A three-level, quarter-block development at 870 Grand Pl. at Victoria St. South, managed by Exeter Realty with 26,000 s.f. of retail fronting on two streets. The top two levels of the brick structure are a parking garage. Other teants include J Crew and Pottery Barn. Probably #874, former EQ-Life store. Job listings were posted on August 5th, but in March 2009 an "inactive" tag appeared on the listing. By July '09 city permit records seem to indicate a grocery store is going into the space, not Apple. [project brochure, pdf]
  • Zeil Forum - Frankfurt - Germany - Cancelled? - In early Dec. 2005 real estate sources said Apple had signed a lease for space inside the Zeil Forum, a 7-story shopping center that is part of a huge office, entertainment, residential complex located downtown. However, in March 2009 a nearby location was confirmed on Große Bachenheimer Straße, no doubt replacing this location. [see related news]
  • West 34th - New York City - Cancelled - A December 2005 New York Post story said Apple leased the entire building at 21 W. 34th St. for retail space. The 1930s, five-story loft structure now has offices and two ground-floor retail spaces, is opposite the Empire State Building, one block from Macy's, and two long blocks to Madison Square Garden. The #21 address has 4,000 s.f. of retail, although the entire building totals 20,000 s.f. Adjacent neighbors include Banana Republic, Aldo, Sleepy's mattress store, Zara and Foot Locker. On. Oct. 24, 2006 developer SL Green Realty Corp. announced they had signed Apple to a lease for the space. The company will develop #21, along with adjacent #25-27 and #29 into new retail spaces. In late Jan. 2007 Forbes Magazine reported that the store plans were cancelled because the location wasn't hip enough, leaving Apple with a $5.5 million lease commitment. But, in Oct. 2007 renderings surfaced showing a 30-store building at the site, with an Apple store occupying the bottom three floors. Mortgage documents seem to back-up the illustrations. • N.W. 23rd Avenue - Portland, OR - Cancelled? - In July, 2005 Apple's architectural representative (Holst Architecture, Portland) proposed demolishing the current 3-story building at 437 N.W. 23rd Ave. at Glisan, and building a two-story, street-level store. Documents (pdf) filed with the city note the lot is 50"x100" and includes a building constructed in 1982. The potential store would be “double height, one-floor corner retail building shell approximately 4,750 square feet,” with, “a clear glass storefront glazing system is proposed along the full frontage of the NW 23rd Avenue, and a 1/3 frontage along NW Glisan Street." Public meetings to obtain design advice were postponed at least three times during Sept.-Nov. 2005, but finally held Nov. 28th. The Design Commission was critical of the design and height. Hearings for June 12 and July 10, 2006 were postponed. As of Jan. 2007 no new hearings were scheduled. In Sept. 2007 the building owner submitted another design for approval, but not with Apple as a tenant. In mid-August, 2008 the building was demolished and an amended permit was issued, with slight design changes. By Jan. 2009 construction on something was underway. • Flatiron District - New York City - Cancelled - The district is named for an historic and architecturally-significant, triangular-shaped, 22-story building at Fifth Ave. and Broadway. Apple selected the space at 136 Fifth Ave., the former Andrew's Coffee Shop that now occupies 3,550 s.f. in one story. It's the fourth store open or identified in Manhattan, about mid-way between the existing SoHo store and future GM Plaza store. Appeared as a job location on Feb. 24, 2005, and positions posted March 2, 2005. Read the details of Apple's design proposals for the space. On Sept. 23, 2005 a sign was spotted on the building, "Retail Space Available," indicating that Apple's plan were rejected by the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission, and that Apple canceled plans for this store. • 108 N. State Street - Chicago - cancelled - This is the city's original downtown shopping district that includes giants Marshall Fields (founded 1902), Sears (1893) and Carson Pirie Scott (1854). It has experienced a recent retail upswing that includes more hip retailers, along with restaurants, theaters and old-time jewelers. Less than one mile from the existing NMA Apple store. Tipster originally Apple will locate along the street by 2006, possibly inside the 108 State Street development that developer Mills Development Corp. broke ground on Nov. 17, 2005. In Oct. 2007 local media reported Apple was negotiating a lease on 6,000 s.f. on single level near the corner of State St. and Washington St., possible some combination of spaces #126/128/130/136 on the State St. side of the project. In May, 2008 local media reported Apple was still negotiating. Job listings posted Sept. 26, 2008. In March 2009 a lawsuit revealed that Apple pulled out of this project in Dec. 2008. • Eastern Shore Centre - Spanish Fort, AL - A 462,000 square-foot open-air lifestyle center scheduled to open October 20, 2004. It's was being developed by Malbis Bay, LLC and will include Dillard's, Belk and Sears. The center is at the intersection of Highway 181, Interstate 10 and Highway 31, directly across from the Timbercreek Golf Club. This site was identified as an store site in late 2003, but a sign of Centre tenants that appeared in early May 2004 did not include Apple. In Sept. 2004 mall management said it does not have a signed lease with Apple. But in Nov. 2004 a tipster reported that Apple expressed early interest in the center, but has backed away, perhaps until the second phase, or until revenue figures are firmer for the mall. Since then, no action so probably cancelled.

Beyond Even What I Know...

Over the years there have been lots of speculation on where Apple will put its next retail store--some more accurate than others. Below I provide degree of speculation, hopes and dreams! For a more scientific approach, see my ranked list of possible future U.S. stores, international stores, and airport mini-stores.

  • The most obvious holes in Apple's international coverage are found in Asia, and in that area Hong Kong is a conspicuous absence. The city is perhaps the most commerce-focused city in the world, is a major business center, and hosts millions of international tourists each year. But the city's commerce and culture is divided between mainland and island components, making a site decision difficult. Each section of the city also has an on-going retail real estate evolution, which further complicates the selection of a store site. I know that Apple is working to identify a proper store location, and a store here could appear during 2009/2010.
  • Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia are additional Asia locations where Apple has been evaluating locations. Singapore and Malaysia in particular are on Apple's retail radar, while political and financial conditions make South Korea and Taiwan less likely targets.
  • Charlottesville (VA) - In March, 2008 the Cvillan Web site reported that Apple real estate execs had been scouting the town of 45,000. Then in May, 2008 they posted another equally-speculative item about a possible Apple store. Who knows...?
  • Puerto Rico - In late 2007 the local Macintosh Users Group began a campaign to bring a store to the U.S. commonwealth. The island is a major tourist destination, but has a high poverty rate, low median income, and a large disparity between income classes. But its culture mirrors those of the 50 states, especially regarding technology and electronics, creating a demand for products. A large Best Buy opened Feb. 29, 2008 in city center, and several international retailers have located flagship stores on the island. The Users Group is circulating a petition and has held a mall gathering to promote their effort, but there's no official word on a future Apple store. [World Bank income info] [world income map- pdf]
  • Foxboro (Mass.) - The home of the New England Patriot football team, it's also the location of Patriot Place, a 450-acre development built by the Kraft family with retail, entertainment and residential to make the site a 12-month attraction. The location would substantially fill in coverage that now surrounds the Boston region.
  • Columbia (SC) - In Sept. 2009 the local newspaper said developers of a new shopping complex were in talks with Apple and other retailers about occupying a 4,200 s.f. space at Blossom Street and Santee Avenue, one of three buildings to be built as part of Shoppes at Five Points.
  • Singapore / Malaysia - Apple has been investigating and doing research on opening a store in these two countries, but it's unknown if that work has generated an official store project.
  • Apple's plans for the UK include at least 35 to 40 stores, basically on on every major city's "High Street" in the country. This would include the store-less cities of Manchester, Bristol, Derby, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Norwich, York and Oxford.
  • Apple's plans for Australia probably include additional locations in Sydney and Melbourne, and also new stores in Adelade and Canberra.
  • Check Sayhey's postings on the MacRumor's forum, and then his list of Top 20 metro areas without an Apple store, which are all excellent (and logical) prospects for future stores.
  • There has been lots of talk about additional stores in metro U.S. areas that already have a retail store, including in or near the following: St. Louis, Coral Gables (Fla.), Chicago (Highland Park), Los Angeles (Long Beach, Riverside), Reston (Virg.), Baltimore, Cleveland (Eton Collection), Denver (Park Meadows), Tampa (Old Hyde Park Village), Geneva IL (Geneva Commons), New Jersey (Princeton, Marketfair), Long Island NY (Greenvale), Dallas/Ft. Worth (The Galleria, The Woodlands), and Richmond VA (Stoney Point Fashion Park). Check my analysis of possible locations using a point system.
  • AppleInsider's posted 27 potential sites for future Apple stores in Japan [story].
  • In other countries not mentioned above, the possibilities are (in no particular order): Amsterdam (P.C. Hooftstraat area), Rome (Spanish Steps), and Brussels (chaussée d'Ixelles area, or City 2 mall). Some other options are Stockholm (Sweden), Vienna (Austria), Madrid (Spain), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Athens (Greece). [See the more extensive discussion.]
  • Check this chart of computers per capita worldwide to see how countries stack up against the United States.
